Pay Attention to Mechanics
Because fixing a mechanical issue can be expensive, it’s important to make sure all of the mechanics of the used RV you’re looking at are in proper working order. Check to make sure slides, awnings, steps, and anything else that might have a motor operate properly. Get underneath the trailer to make sure its under body isn’t rusted or damaged. Look for cracks, welding issues, and damage that might come from impact while driving.
Look at Tires, Wheels, and Axles
Ensure your tires are evenly worn and in good condition. Check the wheels and bearing to look for rust and corrosion. Tires should be less than 5 years old and should have been stored properly to avoid damage from the sun (tire rot). Any tired issues could result in a dangerous accident so you should be prepared to pay to get these fixed immediately or look for a different RV.
Check out the roof, ceiling, and floor for any evidence of leaks. Look for water stains, mold, and mildew – all of which are a result of exposure to the elements. Check if the side walls are sturdy. if they aren’t write of the unit immediately as this is a very costly fix. Inspect windows to make sure they aren’t leaking and that their operating mechanism is working well. It might seem like a cheap fix, but be sure to get estimates before buying an RV with possibly damaged windows. The price can easily get expensive.
Check with the dealer to find out what work has been done to maintain the stove, refrigerator, microwave, and oven. Your most pricey item will be the refrigerator. If this is broken you’ll need to consider if replacing it will be worth the cost or if you need to move on to another unit. Every other appliance with be a few hundred dollars to replace.
